What's New?

Law Enforcement Killings Highest Since 1997

Be careful out there, and WEAR YOUR VEST !

  • "Sept. 11 terrorist attacks produced the single deadliest day in the history of U.S. law enforcement — 72 officers killed — yet almost as many died in nonterrorist incidents during 2001 as violence against police rose to a four-year high...

...70 other law enforcement officers were killed by criminals around the country in 2001, the highest number since 1997 "

  • "Police are most likely to be shot to death with a handgun. All but nine of the nonterrorism murders involved a firearm."

  • "Night is the most dangerous time for a cop and Friday the most dangerous day. Sunday is the least violent."

  • "Thirty-eight of the 61 officers killed by guns in 2001 were wearing body armor, but in all but one case, the bullet found a vulnerable area such as an officer's head or armhole."

  • "There were also almost 57,000 assaults on officers as they performed their duties in 2001, with 80 percent of them involving hands, fists, feet and the like."

Remember your vest is excellent blunt trauma protection from the much more common NON-ballistic assaults as well.

Proposed BANS on Body Armor for Civilians!

Maryland

The latest misguided attempt to ban civilian possession of body armor (without a special permit) is Maryland Governor Parris N. Glendening's proposal. Just a couple of questions...

  1. What about all the law-abiding citizens (like ALL THESE PEOPLE...) who needed protection right away? When you receive death threats, or when you or your store has just been robbed at gun point, you don't want to have to wait for a bureaucrat (who life is NOT at risk) to process your application for defensive protection.

  2. Criminals don't have a hard time buying guns on the black market... Why would Body Armor be any different?

  3. Why should thousands of law-abiding folks be deprived of protection just to make it tougher for criminals to get Body Armor?

If we really wanted to put a dent in crime, we could ban all unapproved use of the criminal's transportation of choice – the car. Would that be worth it? What about banning the criminal's communication tool of choice, the phone? The list goes on and on...

We should take all reasonable measures to make the difficult job of police work easier – but not at the expense of the basic human right to defend oneself. As Orson Welles put it, "Only in a police state is the job of a policeman easy."

Any technology can be used for both good and bad purposes. Let's punish criminals who harm others, not put innocent lives at risk by depriving them of protection.
